Acting on the radio is challenging, inspiring, delicate and always a privilege.

WILD ABOUT PANDAS

The documentary Wild About Pandas, narrated by David Tennant, was broadcast on BBC One Scotland on February 1, 2012 at 8:00 pm and then again on BBC 2 all regions on February 10, 2012 at 9:00 pm.

The show's producer and the director is Karen Kelly and the Executive Producer is Jo Roe

The hour long documentary follows the lives of pandas Tian Tian (Sweetie) and Yang Guang (Sunshine), and the preparations made for their transfer to Edinburgh Zoo from the Ya'an Reserve in China. The pandas will only be at the zoo for ten years.

Vet Simon Girling travels to find out how the pair fare in their homeland, while keeper Alison Maclean heads to the Wolong reserve to investigate efforts to introduce more of the animals into the wild.

The zoo is paying £600,000 a year for the pandas upkeep and hope that they will bring in over one million visitors in the coming year, as well as having high hopes that they will mate.

They arrived in Scotland on December 4, 2011 after a 9 hour flight and were sequestered from the public for 2 weeks before going on display on the newly constructed "Panda Trail".

FedEx transported the Pandas and for the occasion the plane was adorned with pictures of the pandas and bamboo leaves.  The crew even wore kilts for the flight!
