HAIRY MACLARY SERIES
The Hairy Maclary series of children's books are written by New Zealand born author Lynley Dodd.
"Hairy" is a black terrier who first appeared in Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy in 1983. There are currently 12 books in the series and she has sold over 5 million copies of her books worldwide.
The books that are designed to be shared by an adult reader and a young child. The plots of the stories are kept simple and written in rhythmic verse with a twist at the end. The books are designed to be read to the child and contain some very long words that the pre-school age child would probably not have heard but are designed to understood in the context of the story.
The illustrations also add to the interaction between the reader and the child and often contain things not mentioned in the verse. Each double page has an illustration on one side and the verse on the other so the child has a full view of the picture while the adult reads. The child can often find a glimpse of the dog mentioned on the previous page entering into view or leaving the page!

The audio CD, released October 28, 2008, is read by David Tennant, twice, once as normal and then a second time with a "Woof" sound every time you should turn the page.
