Kafka the Musical, was written by Murray Gold aired on April 24, 2011 at 8:00 pm on BBC Radio Three.

Murry Gold has written music for many programmes that David has appeared in including:
Single Father, Dreamland, Infinite Quest, Casanova, the Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) episode Drop Dead, the Love in the 21st Century episode Reproduction, and most notably the re-booted Doctor Who series.

He has been nominated for a BAFTA four times in the category Best Original Television Music, for Vanity Fair (1999), Queer as Folk (2000), Casanova (2005) and Doctor Who (2008)." - BBC

Publicist for the BBC Reetu Kabra posted the above rehearsal photo on January 21, 2011.

The 90 minute drama was directed by Jeremy Mortimer, who also directed David in the radio drama The Purple Land.

Gold's play starts from the suitably Kafkaesque premise that Franz Kafka finds he has to play himself in a musical about his own life.

The production has garnered two BBC Audio Drama Awards,

David won Best Actor for his portrayal of Kafka in 2012 and Murray Gold won the Tinniswood Radio Drama Award 2012 for Best Radio Drama Script.

"Murray Gold's first radio play Electricity won the Richard Imison award for best new play after its broadcast on Radio 3 in 2001.

It subsequently transferred to the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2004.
